DC Universe Online Preview

Deep down, a lot of people have always wanted to battle evil alongside heroes such as Superman and Batman, and of course, there are the people who have wanted to pillage and destroy alongside villains such as Lex Luthor and Doomsday. Well, here is your chance with DC Universe Online.

Five years after the game was initially mentioned, a release date has been set for DC Universe Online, a potentially cross-platform MMORPG , that will be playable on PC and the PS3. In the game, players will be able to choose whether they will play as a hero or a villain and customize their character to their liking. They can choose to copy the characteristics of a superhero or villain that is already in the game, using the 'Inspire' feature, or they will be able to create a player from scratch. There are four characteristics that players will be able to choose from that will determine the powers of their hero or villain. These are Super Power, Power Source, Movements, and Abilities. Players will also be able to select their character's origin. These include Metropolis, Gotham City, and Arkham Asylum. All players will start in Metropolis, though.

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction has been cited as one of the key ingredients in their unique gameplay. SOE claimed that they wanted to make the gameplay more interactive, but they also want to keep the feeling of playing an MMORPG intact. This should be a really interesting mix considering that it will be playable on both PC and the PS3. From what I understand, players will have unique storylines for their characters that make the game interesting for each individual player. That definitely adds to the individuality factor that many people are looking for in MMORPGs.

Another interesting thing about DC Universe Online is that in a lot of the mini missions players will complete, they will have to face other players to complete them. This could be a great thing, but I feel like it could also interfere with people who just want to progress through the game without the player-versus-player aspect.

DC Universe Online has potential to be a groundbreaking MMORPG and the true power of this game won't be known until the November 2 release. Also, a $14.99 monthly subscription cost has been revealed, but that is to be expected with any MMORPG. I'm hoping that we will see a very new type of gaming that will alter the world of MMORPGs. Hopefully, SOE will not only be able to compete with giants such as World of Warcraft but will also be able to provide features that have yet to be offered by any other game.
